There are number of serious problems, which can only be solved using universal, fault-tolerant Quantum Computers. Today working Quantum Computers have been demonstrated using superconductive rings, photons, cold ions and cold neutral atoms.
The cold neutral atoms approach offers major advantages:
• atoms (qubits) are intrinsically identical,
• can be cooled, trapped and manipulated by optical traps in large numbers,
• can be well isolated from the noisy environment thus preserving quantum coherence for a long time.
But there is a fundamental problem with all these technologies:
A usable QC first needs a sufficiently large number of qubits (>100,000 and more) with high connectivity between qubits and high gate fidelity.
